There are many ways that you can help Devon and Cornwall 4x4 Response, even if you don’t have a four-wheel drive vehicle, or even a vehicle for that matter. Any organisation, charitable or otherwise, relies heavily on its ‘back room’ staff to manage and maintain its services, and DC4X4R is no different. When our Responders are deployed to an incident, maintaining good communication links is vital and we are always looking for volunteers to take on this important role. As a Controller, you would be responsible for monitoring the Responders using our tracking and communication software, carrying out regular welfare checks and organising changeover cover for long deployments. The Controller also co-ordinates multiple taskings, such as transporting critical medical personnel, keeping accurate records as the incidents progress. At a major incident or event, you would most likely be based in our mobile Incident Support Unit, but in poor weather conditions, this role can be carried out at home, provided an internet connection is available. Full training is given of course if you wish to follow this path.

How about joining our Fundraising Team? DC4X4R relies on public donations and sponsorship to remain operational. As well as being available to provide support for Category 1 & 2 emergency services, DC4X4R is involved with many charities and festivals across the South-West, manning road closures, marshalling and providing safety vehicles for carnivals. We also attend county shows, offering car park duties in exchange for a stand, where we can showcase our services. Another crucial role. Devon and Cornwall 4x4 Response primarily provides logistical support to Category 1 & 2 emergency services in poor weather conditions. As you have gathered, however, our services don’t stop there. We will help when others can’t. Not just when it snows, or floods. Our Responders travelled more than 15,000 miles delivering vital PPE and medical supplies throughout the Covid-19 pandemic”; we helped provide a safety cordon around an unexploded bomb in Exeter and we support the Army and DRG during the annual Ten Tors weekend over Dartmoor.
Don’t join us if you just want to drive in the snow, it rarely happens in the South-West. Don’t join us if you just want to recover broken down vehicles, we are not a recovery service. Don’t join us if you want to find green lanes at the weekend, we are not an Off-road Club. Join us if you want to help the local community, at times when they really need help. Join us if you want to make a difference. Join us if you want to celebrate the life of a loved one, who has been cared for by one of the many hospices in the South-West. Join us if you want to become a member of a professional, well-trained and friendly group of likeminded volunteers. Join us if you want to help when others can't.
